May started well with the return of Dr Twigs Way for an illustrated talk titled ” Poison in the borders, death in the beds” Dr Twigs is always an energetic, entertaining speaker who is very much master of her brief. The purpose of her talk was, of course, more to teach us how to keep ourselves and our pets safe in our gardens rather than to show us how to do away with our nearest and dearest.

It seems Spring explodes with a poisonous bang as all those early spring bulbs and flowers that we are so happy to see push through and bloom as winter fades are armed from root to tip with all sorts of nasty chemicals to help protect them from eager four-legged nibblers who fancy something fresh after the meager pickings of winter.

As the seasons progress Nature needs to work not quite as hard to protect herself so the dangers in our borders and in the hedgerows are less numerous.

The moral of the story? It is well worth informing oneself of the potential of our garden plants, interesting too, and also following good hygiene practice during and after gardening.

Growing vegetables in small spaces

On the 22nd of May we welcomed Pauline Harper, local passionate vegetable grower, horticultural judge, exhibitor and speaker, to talk to us about growing vegetables in small spaces. Pauline’s entries in local shows are often winners, and her talk aimed to show how everyone can grow vegetables and fruit whatever the size of their garden.

The small spaces ranged from terracotta pots and up-cycled household bowls and tubs to raised beds 4′ x 10′. The talk was inspiring and very informative, with many helpful tips specific to a variety of vegetables, containers, and problems, and a particularly helpful question and answer session to close.
