Salle Park July Visit

July 24, 2023

Our July visit took us to the walled kitchen garden of Salle Park, which also has a superb vine house, a glass house, and a heritage orchard. Tom Barwick, the Head Gardener, was most interesting and engaging, explaining a little of the history of the garden, and how in recent times it has been brought back to full productivity, providing fruit and vegetables and flowers for the needs of the big House, the estate, and its workers, while passing surplus over to Salle Moor Market Garden for their boxes scheme. This year has been a difficult year for all gardens but the Salle produce looked splendid nevertheless.

We learnt how they operate a ‘no dig’ system in their vegetable beds and herbaceous borders, use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and how they match their choice of plants to the various micro-climates created by the high brick walls.

We ended the afternoon with a walk through the formal gardens of the house to the elegant Orangery where tea and cake were waiting for us.
